Maya Kamizono (神園 麻耶, Kamizono Maya) is one of the main heroines from Gal*Gun: Double Peace. She is a 1st year student attending Class 1-B at Sakurazaki Academy. She is a demon hunter and is one of the main love interests for Houdai Kudoki.
She and Shinobu are the protagonists of Gal Guardians: Demon Purge, a Gal*Gun spinoff.
Her ending theme in Double Peace is Twinkle, Twinkle, Double Star (Twinkle, Twinkle, W Star)
Appearance[]
Maya Kamizono has short black hair that reaches her neck. She has her bangs pushed to the right side, along with two pointed X-shaped hair clips on that side. She wears a distinct white Oni mask on the left side of her head, featuring pink slanted eyes, a jagged smile, and curved horns. Her eyes are hot pink. She wears two enchanted bells on a pink string around her neck.
In the Gal*Gun games and outside of combat in Gal Guardians: Demon Purge, Maya wears her old school's uniform, standing out from the usual Sakurazaki Academy summer uniform. It is a gray and white buttoned up sailor uniform with a gray skirt. It has a big pink bow tie. Unlike many of the other students, Maya does not wear any visible socks.
In Gal Guardians, she wears a gothic style red and black uniform, with a black and white twin-tailed scarf that trails behind her. On her right leg, she has a holster that contains paper used for her enchanted origami weapons.

Personality[]
Maya is usually distant, choosing to speak very little. When talking about her interests, such as shows about giant robots, she shows great enthusiasm. Additionally, she cares very deeply about Shinobu, to the point where Maya is willing to sacrifice her own happiness for her sake. Most of the time, she is a gentle girl who wishes to befriend others, even demons, rather than hurt them. When angered, however, not even Houdai or her older sister can stand up to her.
In Gal Guardians: Demon Purge, Maya is the most composed and knowledgeable of the human cast. She tends to think ahead, although sometimes she acts rather unusual.
Abilities[]
In the Gal*Gun games, Maya has paper shurikens and doll-shaped papercrafts at her disposal. In addition to that, she is usually accompanied by a magic doll named Houdai-kun. She possesses the best demon hunting prowess the Kamizono family has seen in generations, and is capable of seeing both angels and demons. Despite all this talent, she is no good at sports, especially swimming.
In Gal Guardians, she specializes in close range combat using magic origami, and is capable of using magical subweapons oriented around utility. These include creating a protective barrier using paper dolls, and summoning a giant origami crane to use as a platform. Due to her smaller size, she is able to crawl into small spaces which her sister cannot normally reach. However, she is less physically durable than her older sister.

Gal Guardians[]
Maya specializes in close range combat, using magic origami to conjure melee weapons. She is capable of using a three slash combo on the ground, as well doing aerial slashes and crouching slashes. Her slashes are capable of piercing shields. Despite her combat style, she possesses lower base health than Shinobu. Due to her smaller size, however, she is able to crawl in spaces and avoid hazards that Shinobu can't. Many of Maya's magical subweapons focus on utility.
At the start of the game's second loop, she gains the ability to use a charge slash. When used, it deploys an origami buzzsaw, and if used in mid-air, the recoil pushes her back upwards.

Story[]
This section spoils the HELL out of games in the Gal*Gun series. Don't say I didn't warn ya!
Gal*Gun: Double Peace[]
Being one of the main heroines of Gal*Gun: Double Peace, Maya is a romance option for Houdai. She and Shinobu were Houdai's childhood friends, but one day she had to move away due to family business. The two meet again at the entrance of Sakurazaki Academy, but the conversation between them is very brief.
However, Maya and her sister's pursuit of Kurona leads to a fateful re-encounter with Houdai, who is now afflicted with the Popul-aura and is capable of seeing angels and demons. Maya, having enough spiritual power to see the supernatural herself, immediately is able to piece the situation together, but decides not to tell Shinobu or Houdai. Her role in the story is dependent on the route chosen.
Shinobu Route[]
When consulted about a potential reason Shinobu would reject Houdai, she firmly refuses the possibility, stating that Shinobu loves him. During Maya's three years of training, Shinobu would always talk to her about him and sounded happy when doing so. After Houdai mentions that Shinobu had distanced herself from him during those 3 years, she couldn't think of a reason why she would do so.
She secretly follows Houdai and overhears Shinobu lamenting her lack of ability compared to Maya and Houdai. After Shinobu leaves the room, she apologizes for not stepping into the discussion. Houdai asks her if demon hunting is hard on her, and her response is that while it is difficult, it's not impossible for the sisters to handle. She acknowledges that defeating demons is necessary because of the misdeeds they carry out. However, she says that even among demons, some are actually good. Thus, she wants to befriend them, rather than hunt them, if possible. Regardless if they're a demon or angel, she wants to befriend people, not hurt them. After this discussion, she calls Shinobu and sets up a meeting between her and Houdai at the park.
When she arrives at the meeting spot, Shinobu is rejecting Houdai's confession due to Maya's feelings for Houdai. Maya intervenes, claiming that she's moved on a long time ago. She loves Houdai, but would much rather see him and Shinobu being happy together. Shinobu argues that she feels the same way towards her and Houdai, but Maya counters that it's not the same because it's not taking Houdai's own feelings into consideration. Maya then gives Houdai approval to use the Doki Doki Field, without elaborating about how she knows of it.
True Ending[]
After Houdai completes Final Doki Doki Mode, thus binding Shinobu and Houdai as soulmates, Ekoro and Maya reveals that Shinobu's demon hunting abilities now exceed her's and the head family's thanks to the Popul-aura's power flowing into Shinobu. When questioned if she knew this from the start, Maya simply tells Houdai to get along with Shinobu and the rest of the Kamizono family.
Good Ending[]
Maya is briefly absent following Final Doki Doki Mode, but as Houdai and Ekoro attempt to escape from several girls affected by the Popul-aura, Maya too falls victim to its effects. She declares that she won't lose Houdai to Shinobu, and she, along with the other girls, try to end up as Houdai's girlfriend.
Bad Ending[]
In the bad ending, Maya is waiting for Houdai at the park instead of Shinobu, and she tells Houdai that Shinobu says "We are just friends from now on." As Houdai and Ekoro despair, Maya promises to get Houdai some candy to cheer him up.
Maya Route[]
Maya's Heart Guardian resists Ekoro's attempt to use the Doki Doki Field. Afterwards, she mentions to Houdai that she had noticed the unusual amount of girls chasing him. Upon hearing his excuse that Kurona might be responsible, she asserts that it may be best for him to stay with her and Shinobu. Her Houdai-kun doll introduces itself, and Maya explains it is a messenger doll controlled by her demon-hunting powers. When she is finished with her preparations for luring Kurona, she will call Houdai through the doll. Maya attempts to avoid answering why the doll is named after Houdai, but the doll blurts out that she had missed him during the three years they hadn't seen each other. She promises to see Houdai later and leaves for her next class.
Behind the gym, she is finishing preparations for a demon trap. using a sticky sheet as a means of capture and "Devigree" pellets as bait. When Houdai arrives, she explains the trap and requests for him to place the pellets in the proper spots. However, when he smells the pellets, he sneezes so forcibly that it causes Maya to stumble into the demon trap. With Houdai's help and a great deal of struggling, Maya manages to free herself from the sticky situation. When asked why she's trying to capture Kurona rather than using a more deadly trap, Maya explains that due to the nature of the tricks being played by Kurona, she's likely an apprentice demon trying to pass her make-up lessons. If she doesn't pass those lessons, it's likely she would receive a severe punishment. Since the demon trap ended up backfiring, Maya decides she needs to come up with a new plan, and leaves Houdai behind.
While struggling to rescue a cat from a tree, Maya sends Houdai-kun to ask for Houdai's assistence. By the time he arrives at the scene, Maya falls out of the tree and lands on him. While she didn't suffer any major injuries, she still had been hurt enough to warrant concern, and Houdai offers to carry her to the infirmary. She complies, while quietly murmuring an apology to Shinobu. At the infirmary, Maya recalls that she and Houdai used to get hurt a lot as kids due to their reckless behavior. After her injury gets tended to by Houdai, the two continue to make small talk until Shinobu calls Maya's phone. Maya insists for Houdai to answer instead of her. Shinobu requests to talk to Maya before screaming and suddenly dropping the call. This prompts Maya to immediately search for Shinobu.
She and Houdai eventually reunite again, with no new leads. However, they hear Shinobu calling out for Maya, and realize that she's on the school roof, cornered by Kurona and Mr. Demon Balloon. The two rush to the rooftop and find that Shinobu is fine, although defeated. Maya is enraged, but in her anger she gets easily captured and swallowed whole by the demon's familiar. Following the defeat of Mr. Demon Balloon, Maya sternly reprimands Kurona for her actions, and is so angry that she silences even Shinobu and Houdai, who along with Kurona comply. She then leaves the roof (forcibly taking Kurona with her) while Houdai and Shinobu are distracted and talking amongst themselves.
Using her messenger doll, she requests for Houdai to meet her at the tennis court. As Houdai arrives at the meeting spot, she pretends to cry to lure him closer. Immediately, he falls for a series of (relatively) harmless pranks she and Kurona had devised. Thanks to her help, Kurona now has enough Mischief Markers to pass her make-up lessons, and thus won't be scolded by the Demon King. Kurona deeply thanks Maya for her help, and promises to only cause "a little trouble" the next time the two meet. In short, the two had unofficially become friends.
After the demon departs, Maya loosens Houdai from the rope trap and apologizes for the pranks, explaining that if he knew in advance, it wouldn't count for Kurona's assignment. Ekoro, seeing an opportunity, attempts to activate the Doki Doki Field to pierce the Heart Guardian. However, the Guardian's rejection only grew stronger, and Maya asserts that even an angel's power would not work on a demon hunter like herself. Furthermore, she was surprised that the duo did not know Ekoro was visible to her the entire time. While she doesn't know the entire situation, she heard enough from them to know that Houdai is afflicted with the Popul-aura.
Maya, aware of angel arrow's power to connect with a destined lover, insists to use it for Shinobu rather than herself. The Kamizono head family had divined fate and determined that when Shinobu and Houdai become a couple, Shinobu's demon hunting powers are intensely magnified to the point where she would surpass Maya and would be ensured happiness. This was the true reason Maya had been sent to train with the head family while Shinobu stayed behind. Ideally, neither of the destined couple were supposed to know, but due to Houdai's infatuation with Maya, she felt it was necessary to explain. She denies Houdai's feelings towards her, claiming that the influence of the arrow is confusing his love for her sister. The firm belief in destiny is the source of her Guardian's strength, She once again affirms that Shinobu loves Houdai enough that she would accept a confession from him, and wishes him luck in that endeavor before leaving.
Maya receives a phone call from Shinobu telling her to meet up at the park. However, she is surprised to see Houdai arrive at the meeting spot instead. Upon learning that Houdai's love life is hinged on finding a girlfriend before the sun sets, she urges him to confess to Shinobu quickly. However, Houdai continues to insist that his feelings are for Maya alone, and Ekoro chimes in that Houdai had made this decision himself, without the influence of destiny or the angel's arrow. Maya is angered, concluding that Ekoro is cheating Houdai and Shinobu out of their destined happiness. She then receives a wager from Houdai: if he can defeat Maya with the power of the Pheromone Shot, then she must accept that his feelings for her are true. She accepts this challenge, fighting for Shinobu and Houdai's happy ending.
Upon her defeat, Maya is left in disbelief. She still clings to the prophecy, but Houdai pointedly asks her if Shinobu really would be happy with that fate. Shinobu comes out of hiding, and scolds Maya for believing that, even while aware of Maya's own feelings, becoming a couple with Houdai would truly make her happy. She especially wouldn't be happy to be in a relationship with someone who wasn't interested in her. Maya, faced with Shinobu's resistance, asks her what she should do. Her sister implores her to be honest with her feelings, and to encourage her, confesses to Houdai knowing fully that she'd be rejected. When prompted to confess in turn, Maya hesitates. However, this hesitation has lowered her guard enough for Ekoro and Houdai to successfully trigger the Final Doki Doki Field.
True Ending[]
Maya finally confesses her love to Houdai, feelings that she had harbored since their childhood. However, she had always suppressed those feelings because she knew Shinobu loved Houdai as well. After some hesitation, she accepts Houdai's request to be a couple, and declares her desire to be boyfriend and girlfriend. Upon the two's mutual confessions, the Angel Arrow's power triggers, binding them by fate as a couple. As Ekoro begins to leave, Maya apologizes for her behavior towards her, to which the angel mentions is unnecessary, given that the Popul-aura situation was her own fault to begin with. The newly formed couple bids Ekoro farewell, and Maya asks Houdai if he truly is fine with her as a girlfriend. She doesn't doubt in her love for Houdai, but she wanted to be sure if he felt the same. Maya feels concern about Shinobu finding love, but Houdai reassures her, saying that she'd be popular even without the effects an Angel's Arrow, and believes that Shinobu will find a great partner one day. The story ends with Maya declaring that there's no better boyfriend than Houdai himself.
Good Ending[]
Maya hesitates, but with Shinobu's encouragement, she manages to confess her love to Houdai. The newly formed couple have an awkward exchange, and Shinobu decides to home, wishing them good luck. Maya and Houdai decide to head home together, but are suddenly interrupted by a group of female students, who still wish to be Houdai's girlfriend. Patako makes a sudden appearance as well, and she explains to Maya that since Houdai didn't give her enough euphoria from the Doki Doki Field, the process ensuring destiny tying the two as lovers is incomplete. Thus, he is still under the effects of the Popul-aura. Maya questions who she is, commenting that she looks like an angel, but also like a human. Maya assumes Patako had resistance to the Popul-aura, but the former angel loses her last shred of resistance right at that moment and attempts to become Houdai's girlfriend. As Houdai runs away, swearing to go on a date with Maya after class, Maya cheerfully giggles before trying to catch up and help him out.
Bad Ending[]
Maya does not show up at the meeting spot, and instead, her Houdai-kun doll is awaiting the pair. Upon seeing them, the doll declares it is Maya's familiar no longer, and makes a love confession to Houdai. Maya had anticipated Houdai's attempt to call Shinobu, and had the doll mimic Shinobu's voice when Houdai called. The doll then proceeds to perfectly mimick Shinobu's voice in front of the duo, much to their shock. With little time left, Ekoro seriously suggests for Houdai to accept the confession. The doll cheerfully hopes that they develop a relationship together and Houdai, in disbelief, loudly screams a denial to the heavens,
Sisters Route[]
When the Kamizono sisters meet with Houdai again and witness his use of the Pheromone Shot, Maya reveals to Shinobu that an angel is accompanying Houdai. This surprises everyone else, and Ekoro is shocked that Maya's spiritual power is high enough to see her. Maya had meant to explain the situation to Shinobu earlier, but she never found a good time to.
At the school roof, Maya reluctantly goes along with Shinobu's attempt to do a ritual that would allow them to communicate with Ekoro. After the ritual, Houdai and Shinobu are incredibly excited, to both Maya and Ekoro's confusion. Shinobu recklessly jumps off the roof, but is rescued by Ekoro's intervention. Maya scolds her sister for her reckless behavior, resulting in Shinobu's apology and thanking Ekoro for saving her life (while looking in the wrong direction). The demon hunter duo decide to meet with Houdai at the Forbidden Room.
At the Forbidden Room, Shinobu and Maya start the "360th Houdai meeting" (Maya tells Houdai not to think about why it's the 360th...), where Houdai's predicament was explained. After Houdai's vague answer about what girl he liked and the awkward silence that followed, it is decided that stopping Kurona should be a top priority. Maya overhears Ekoro's approval of the plan, as well as her belief that Houdai's confession towards Shinobu would go well. She voices her agreement, and the sisters move out to enact their plan.
At the school pool, Maya and Shinobu are wearing their school swimsuits, much to Houdai and Ekoro's confusion. Shinobu explains that to lure Kurona to them, they need to apply the Kamizono family's Demon-Attracting Balm on their bodies, and it requires someone of the opposite sex to apply it. Maya is embarrassed about the situation, but Shinobu insists on going through with it. After the Balm is applied, Maya and Shinobu head off to deal with Kurona, but encourage him to tell his feelings to the girl he likes before doing so.
Maya and Shinobu confront Kurona, who was attracted to the smell of the Demon Attracting Balm. Upon Houdai and Ekoro arriving as well, Kurona flees into an underground cave. Shinobu advises Houdai and Ekoro to wait outside, and Maya tells them that if they take too long, to come in and rescue them. This proves to be a wise move, as the two siblings end up captured by Mr. Demon Veggie, one of Kurona's strongest minions. The mucus from the monster also neutralized the smell from the demon balm, meaning it could not be used as a ploy again.
After the Veggie's defeat, Kurona mourns for the loss of most loyal minion, eliciting sympathy from Maya and Houdai. However, Shinobu promptly banishes her back to Hell, asserting that these demon plants were common in Hell anyway and thus slightly easing the two's feelings. With demon hunting done, the sisters begin to leave, but Houdai stops them, requesting to meet at the park from their childhood to discuss something of personal importance. The two comply.
The two await at the meeting spot, and when Houdai arrives, he confesses that he is in love with both sisters and wants to date both, Maya is visibly displeased with the idea. Houdai explains that after Maya left, Shinobu had ignored him for those three years, but he still retained feelings for her. Maya questions why he didn't confess to her given that, to which he explains that he believed he'd never express his love and kept those feelings bottled up, but when Maya returned, he realized that he loved her just as much as Shinobu; he couldn't approach one without the other there. Maya asserts that as long as Shinobu was happy, then she's fine with Houdai needing Maya there to confess to her. Shinobu then reveals that she was keeping her distance from Houdai because it'd be unfair to be with him without her, and wished for Maya and Houdai to be couple. However, Maya insists that Shinobu and Houdai are destined lovers, as determined by the head family's divinations.
Their argument is interrupted by Houdai (breaking the fourth wall) wanting to skip over the details that were already explained in the previous routes, and asserts that the best solution to the dilemma is for all three to be in a relationship. The two briefly consider the idea, but then decide he's lost his mind when he gets too giddy about it. She and Shinobu object on moral grounds, but is taken aback when Shinobu wagers their approval on a battle. Maya objects, only to fall on deaf ears.
After Houdai's victory, Maya still objects, as opposed to her sister, who seems pleased with the outcome. Maya's resolve drives Shinobu to (poorly) put up one last effort of resistance, prompting Houdai and Ekoro to use the Doki Doki Field as their final ace in the hole.
True Ending[]
Maya and Shinobu confess their love to Houdai. Although she believes the relationship is morally wrong, she concedes that it's what she wants. She and Shinobu support Houdai's desire to become a strong demon hunter in order to prove his worth to the Kamizono family, and to become strong enough together that they won't have to care about what other people think. Maya admits despite her previous belief of being content if Shinobu alone was happy, she can't deny that being with Houdai herself has her overjoyed. Upon hearing Shinobu mentioning feeling stronger when with Houdai and realizing that the prophecy had technically been fulfilled, Maya agrees with Houdai's jest of it being a miracle of love. She asserts that Houdai had the power to change destiny itself, and has her complete trust. The story ends with the two sisters wanting to be Houdai's brides.
Angel/Demon Route[]
In the Angel/Demon route, Maya gets possessed by Kurona, and is forced to fight Houdai. After Houdai dispels the possession and Kurona is confronted, Maya is happy at how Ekoro and Kurona seem to be getting along and envisions a potential friendship between the two. She reveals that she could see Ekoro the whole time; she just never mentioned it. Regardless of whether Houdai decides to help Kurona or prioritize removing the Popul-aura first, Maya is exhausted from the battle and goes home early.

As a child, she used to play together with Shinobu and Houdai quite often, but 3 years ago she was sent to another home due to family matters. She has not seen Houdai since then. By happenstance, she transfers back to Sakurazaki Academy at the same time as Ekoro and Kurona's exams have begun. Ito: I wanted to make a different uniform, so I made her a transfer student. I remember designing the character with a brooding atmosphere and trying to make her inconspicuous. In this context, I added a mask in the sense of differentiating the characters from each other.
I also had crosses and bells decorated on these two characters, as they are both meant to be demon hunters.

Etymology[]
- The name Maya means "hemp, flax" (麻) (ma) and "question mark" (耶) (ya).
- Maya's surname Kamizono means "god, deity" (神) (kami) and "garden, park, plantation" (園) (sono/zono).
Trivia[]
- Maya makes an appearance in Mighty Gunvolt, where she is one of the girls that can appear trapped in a cage during the Mr. Demon Plant Jr. boss fight. This predates the release of Double Peace.
- It is possible that the primarily red Gal Guardians design for Maya is in reference to Gal*Gun's first year students having a red/pink color scheme for their outfits.
- In Gal Guardians, Maya has an idle animation where she puts on her mask and throws punches, with the third punch dealing significant damage. This is a homage to the Maya's Medical Care event in Double Peace, in which failure results in her putting on her mask and knocking Houdai down with a single punch.
- Some of Maya's subweapons in Gal Guardians bear similarities to the subweapons in the Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon series, which Inti Creates also developed.
- In Maya's route, there are mentions of her liking "Z'Gox". This is a reference to Z'Gok from Mobile Suit Gundam.
Connections to the Azure Striker Gunvolt series[]
In Azure Striker Gunvolt, the flagship series of Inti Creates, it is very heavily hinted that Maya Kamizono is the aunt of Copen and Mytyl Kamizono within that series' canon.
- In the Gunvolt side story Fleeting Memories, it is mentioned that the next in line to be the Kamizono family head at the time was the sister of Dr. Kamizono's wife. Dr. Kamizono gained the family name from marrying his wife, rather than the other way around. Additionally, it is mentioned that this heir has a husband, who is left unnamed.
- It is possible that this unnamed husband may have been Houdai Kudoki.
- Copen's Gunvolt 1 Dengeki Nintendo profile mentions that the current family head is his aunt.[2]
- One of the Kamizono family maids, Nori, is heavily hinted to be Kurona. In the Clockwork Daydream drama CD, where Nori seems to temporarily transform into Kurona, Kurona mentions that she is good friends with the current family head.
- Interestingly, the only Double Peace route in which Maya befriends Kurona is the Maya Route.
- In an official Inti Creates stream, CEO Takuya Aizu makes mention of "Mama and Aunt Maya" when the Double Peace 5th anniversary art was the topic.[3]
