Gal*Gun 2 (ぎゃる☆がん2(ぎゃるがんつー) Gyaru Gan Tsū) is a rail shooter Bishōjo video game developed by Inti Creates. The game was released on March 15, 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in Japan. It was released through Steam on July 20, 2018. Several features from Gal*Gun VR like the Demon Sweeper return. Additionally, Doki Doki Mode makes a return after being absent from Gal*Gun VR.

Development History[]

At the time of a Dengeki online interview (11/30/2017), Gal*Gun 2 was roughly 70% complete. Since the shooting gameplay was already finished, only the overseas localization and game balance needed to be completed.[1]

Localization[]

According to Matt Papa and Andrew Singleton, the localization process for the game took almost a year. PQube would directly translate an initial draft, then hand the translated script to Matt and Andrew. The two then modify the translation to better reflect the game's tone, as well as try to solve any potential localization snags. This process took longer than the initial translation, but Matt notes that there was the luxury of time compared to Double Peace's localization. He also mentions how having another localizer (Andrew) to discuss with helped further refine the process.[2]

As an example, one character that posed a challenge was Maria Natsuki, an American student who speaks some English lines. Since the localized script itself was English, this quirk required some creativity to be reflected in-game.

When asked if there were plans to censor content in specific regions, Takuya Aizu responded that Inti Creates was making the game for the Japanese audience they're familiar with first and foremost, and therefore potential for regional bans would not affect the game's content. Matt Papa added that he and PQube had no intentions of censoring the game.[3]

Promotion[]

Inti Creates released a series of "That person tried playing!!" videos on YouTube, where famous people in the game industry played the game and gave their thoughts. The players for these videos were Kenichiro Takagi (known for the Senran Kagura series), Ranko Fukui (PR manager of Ubisoft), Hiroshi Matsuyama (CEO of CyberConnect2), and Takashi Tokita (a Square Enix producer). Only Kenichiro's video received English subtitles.

Story[]

Prologue[]

A few months have passed since the incident in Double Peace.[1] You are a regular student attending Sakurazaki Academy on a normal day. You check your phone to notice an unfamiliar app you don't remember installing. You try to delete it, but it refuses to be uninstalled. When you open up the app, a box magically appears on your desk containing a pair of goggles and a "hair dryer". You try on the goggles and turn them on. The system boots up and an angel appears in front of you. She congratulates you on being a lucky winner from a sweepstakes you've never entered. She later reveals herself as Risu, an elite angel working with Angel Ring Company (or AR Co.) in Heaven. She tells you that you are the chosen "hero" to fight demons at the academy and you have 20 days to rid all of them before they start taking over.

Bad Ending[]

The Protagonist and Risu were unable to find Risu's missing card key before the deadline. Without the card key, Risu can't go back to Heaven, which results in her lamenting about the situation.

Gameplay[]

The gameplay bears similarities to previous Gal Gun games in that it is a shooting game. However, unlike previous games, the player has full control of the camera, and can adjust their height. Pheromone Shots are fired from the Pheromone Goggles, which can be upgraded to increase health and shot power. Like previous games, there is a Streak mechanic tied to getting consecutive Ecstasy Shots without taking damage.

The Demon Sweeper featured from Gal Gun VR returns, which lets you suck mini-demons to earn Demon Busting Points. The Demon Sweeper has a power gauge, which is consumed during use. If the gauge reaches zero, it overheats and is unusable until the overheat wears off. Thus, it is advisable to either get Ecstasy shots, vacuum or shoot a Mr. Happiness (which restores meter), or wait for the gauge to replenish over time. After obtaining an upgrade, continuous use triggers a Hyper Mode, strengthening suction at the cost of increased power consumption, and allowing you to suck off the girls clothes, resulting in a "Striphoria." Striphoria can be faster than striking weakpoints, but rewards no points for doing so and doesn't add Streak. Replacing the screen-clearing Doki Doki Bomb, “Lovestrike” occurs when you zoom in a girl and keep staring until the heart icon fills up. Once filled, shooting the girl will blast up a huge field around and the girls within the vicinity are struck with euphoria. However, the downside to this is that unlike Doki Doki Mode, any girls hit by this besides the original target do not contribute to Streak.

Like Double Peace, missions often have girls possessed by Mini Kuronas, and thus resist the effects of the Pheromone Shot. There are four main Mini Kurona types: regular, Queen, King, and Metal. The type affects their durability, potential actions, and rarity. Metal Mini Kuronas are especially rare and are quick to flee, but are worth a lot of points. There are also giant versions of each type, which can take multiple hits and disperse into multiple Mini Kuronas upon defeat. Defeating them is easy, but more points are rewarded for using the Demon Sweeper to suck up the Mini Kuronas instead. The points from Mini Kuronas are added to your total score at the results screen. The higher the current Streak, the more often Queen and King Mini Kuronas appear.

Queen 200 400
King 800 1600
Metal 2500 5000

When you return home after school, you can do various things in your bedroom, such as decorating your room, checking on your neighbor Chiru, talking to Risu, or inviting girls you have high enough affection for. If you have some machine parts, Chiru can upgrade either the Pheromone Goggles or the Demon Sweeper, depending on the parts you have. When you want to resume progression, you can sleep in bed to advance to the next day. At the Classroom, you can chat with Nanako, or open up the mission menu from your phone. You can do two missions per day, and you must progress to an ending condition before the deadline.

There are five Quest types: Shooting, Defense, Hunting, Boss, and Doki-Doki. Shooting focuses on the shooting gameplay, warding off the advances of girls while advancing through the stage. Defense requires defending girls from an onslaught of Mini Kuronas. Hunting requires finding specific items within in an area before the time limit runs out, many of which require extensive use of height adjustment, camera angle adjustment, and at times the Demon Sweeper. Doki-Doki missions are specific to certain main and side quest storylines, and require use of Doki Doki Mode to purify the demonic influence from a girl. Like Doki-Doki, Boss missions are specific to the main and side quest stories, and involve defeating a boss character.

Another deviation from prior entries is that there are no longer dedicated routes to specific characters. Instead, character endings are determined by meeting certain conditions, such as completing side missions related to the character in question, or main mission progression. Because of this structure, the dialogue system is no longer a factor in gaining affection. Instead, giving enough snacks to Chiru or Nanako progresses their respective storylines.

Like the original Gal*Gun, there is only one save file. However, there is a "New Game +" feature available after getting at least one ending, which allows the player to start the game again with all the upgrades, phone numbers, outfits, items, and side mission progress they had accumulated up until that point.

Risu, Chiru, Nanako, and Kurona make an appearance in Venus Eleven Vivid! as part of a collaboration.[4]

Mononopu[]

Japanese Sengoku Cafe & Bar Mononopu had a collaboration with Inti Creates to promote Gal*Gun 2, featuring menu items based on characters from the game. There were limited time drinks based on Chiru, Shinobu, Maya, and Kurona (of which only Shinobu's had alcohol content), as well as udon and yakisoba bread to represent Risu and Nanako respectively. This promotion lasted from March 2nd, 2018 to March 18th, 2018.[4]

Trivia[]

  • Despite there being two Gal*Gun entries before this title (Double Peace and VR), the game is officially labelled as "Gal*Gun 2." According to Takuya Aizu, the reason is that while Double Peace is a new game with new characters and scenarios, it and the original Gal*Gun were both rail shooters. Gal*Gun 2 is not considered a rail shooter, and thus is considered the "next phase or next step for Gal*Gun."[3]
  • Gal*Gun 2 sets a number of firsts for the series
    • This is the first time the camera is in complete control of the player, rather than fixed angles
    • The game follows a mission based system rather than a chapter based one.
    • This is the first game where finding a love interest is not the main objective. In fact, it is completely optional if you just want to beat the main missions and see the regular ending.
    • For the first time in a main game, there is no canon name for the protagonist.
    • There are no endings tied to love interests who are purely human.
  • Supposedly, there are details regarding the Angel Ring company that were considered too dark to include within the game itself.[1]
  • According to Ito and Nakagawa, the appearance of Shinobu and Maya are treated as guest characters and as a treat for returning players. Thus, they do not touch on which route from Double Peace is canon.[1]
    • That being said, if one were to include the Rendezvous Mode in consideration to what's canon, then the game does not follow the Shinobu, Maya, Sisters, or Demon Routes due to the implied romantic feelings towards the protagonist from relevant characters. Thus, if the pre-release developer intent is considered a higher priority, the Rendezvous Mode is noncanon.
      • However, under the assumption that the Rendezvous Mode is indeed canon, then only the Ekoro and Unseen Destiny true ends, as well as any Double Peace route bad end, can be canon with Gal*Gun 2.
    • Despite the intention of keeping details vague, Shinobu is at minimum capable of hearing angels -- possibly even seeing them -- in the Kamizono side quests. This means her spiritual power has grown greatly in the span of a few months, which indicates that Gal*Gun 2 may follow Double Peace's Shinobu Route or Sisters Route.
  • It is possible that the scrapped "Kamikaze" (Divine Wind) concept from Double Peace served as inspiration for the Demon Sweeper's Hyper Mode upgrade.
